International LanguageIn recent years, world peace and stability has become a bit of a hot topic of debate – since some people want it and others thing it’s a crazy notion. One of the ideas which has been bounced around as a way to help people all get along is the idea of an international language. Instead of having to worry about speaking different languages in different countries, this would create the possibility of having just one language being spoken by all. With this international language, borders would mean less and the world community as a whole might be more included to talk instead of argue. Speaking the Same WordsWhen you can understand another person, it’s a lot easier to get along with them. If you and another person have the same meanings for the same words, not only are you going to be able to ‘get’ what they mean, but you’re also going to understand why they’re saying what they’re saying. Imagine what would happen if the next United Nations meeting didn’t have to include interpreters. People could speak freely and they would be able to know exactly what the other person wanted from them, even if they didn’t agree. When people would travel, they could understand the other person, and vice versa, helping to make for a more enjoyable visit overall. Why Language Creates BarriersEven in English, there are certain words which mean one thing, but slang can cause them to have alternative meanings as well. While this makes sense to us, this might not make sense to others who are around the world. Instead of having different languages, an international language would prevent others from feeling left out. Even if people still had their own home language with its slang, the international language could create a way for the playing field to be level and for people to not feel left out of important conversations. Choosing the Language to SpeakThe big concern with creating an international language is the choosing of a new language. Creating a completely different language doesn’t make sense since this would mean the entire world would need to go back to school. Choosing a language already present in the world is the better option, but then the idea of whose language to choose becomes an international discussion. Some people have already suggested English as the international language since so many countries already have this language in their lexicon. This would mean that all of the other countries would need to learn the basics of English. While this doesn’t sound like a difficult task, it would take years to implement. An international language would make international travel and business far easier and more productive. Though this is certainly an idea that is ahead of its time, the constant discussions about the ability to connect with others is making it seem a little more realistic than it once was. When you can communicate, you can begin to get along. |
