PAINTING YOUR HOME’S EXTERIOR: HOW TO DO IT

Exterior paint color schemes can affect the curb appeal of a house. You can showcase your style with whatever choice of color you make. There are many residential painting services if you want to give your house a fresh look. Changing its exterior paint can make a difference. If you prefer to do things on your own, make sure you follow the proper steps.

Selecting Wisely the Best Painting Contractors

Pressure-wash walls

Use a pressure washer to remove dirt and dust buildup. The best way to do it is to work your way from top to bottom in a smooth, controlled manner. Overlap each stroke by about eight inches.

Repair damaged surfaces

Inspect damaged surfaces such as siding, wood, stucco, masonry, or metal. Use a spackle knife to apply epoxy filler to cracks or holes. Let it dry  before you sand it with a medium-grit sanding block.

Remove loose paint

Once the exterior is dry, get a couple of drop cloths and walk around the perimeter of the house. Look for any loose or chipped paint and then place drop cloths along the ground. Use a paint scraper or medium-grit sanding block to remove chipped and loose paint.

Caulk trim

Use an exterior caulk and caulk gun to fill any gaps. Trim around doors and windows. Add caulk along surfaces where different materials meet, if there are any.

Prime stain

Check the exterior for any stains or visible wood knots. If there are, use a paintbrush and apply one coat of stain-blocking primer to the area in question.

Protect doors, windows, and lights

You should always ensure the protection of the doors, windows, and lighting fixtures. Use plastic sheeting and painter’s tape for you not to make a mess.

Paint exterior

Load your chosen exterior paint color into the paint sprayer. You can apply a coat or two on the entire house. It depends on the hue intensity and your preference. Always start with a coat of primer if you plan to change the exterior color of your house. It will ensure proper coverage. If you plan to use a fresh coat of an existing color then you no longer need to apply a primer.

Paint trim and doors

You can now remove sheathing from doors, windows, and lighting fixtures. Use a paintbrush and add two more coats of exterior semi-gloss paint color. Remove drop cloths once done.

Hiring professionals can be expensive but it is worth it. It is always best to leave things like this to professionals rather than tackle the job yourself.
