In today’s economy, many people are finding themselves looking for a new career. One method that is often used to find a new job is to obtain a college degree. Although it can be hard to work full-time and go to school, many people are making it work by going to college online. Here are some of the popular college degrees that can be obtained online.

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Many people in the business industry want to climb up the career ladder by going into management or into a different business field. A Master in Business Administration (MBA) allows a person to learn more by expanding their knowledge in different areas such as finance, accounting, and management. International studies are also available, which may focus on the foreign financial effect of events such as the Kazakhstan Democracy.

Accounting

Accounting is another popular degree that can be obtained online. Some colleges allow their students to obtain both bachelor and master degrees in accounting thru the Internet. Accounting courses focus on teaching students how to collect and organize large amounts of financial data into the form of business financial statements such as the cash flow and income statements. Students can also enter into the field of federal and state taxation.

Psychology

Another popular online degree program is psychology, which is the study of the human mind. Students can obtain different levels of degrees in the psychology field starting from an associate’s degree up to a doctorate degree. In this program, students are taught about human behavior and their mental processes. Graduates from this program often become counselors and psychologists.

If you have the opportunity to study abroad, you will discover that there a lot of things about other cultures that you did not know. You will encounter different customs that you did not realize were part of what people do in their everyday lives.

Why Study Abroad

The fact of the matter is that people all over the world are all different, being able to learn from them and at their learning institutions is something that if you have the opportunity you should do.

Not only will you be able to make yourself more well-rounded and have a different outlook on the world, you will also be able to see what it is the world looks at when it sees the United States. In many cases, you will need to look at different options and consider the following before you are to go and study abroad.

Will the school be accepting of me

What about books and fees

Are the courses I am studying relevant to my major

Will I be facing issues in regards to international travel and getting back and forth

What about being able to communicate with my family

These are just some of the concerns that you will face when you are going to study abroad. However you need to look at all of the benefits and consider some of the various opportunities you will encounter that you would not have. If you were to stay and study at home you would be limiting yourself greatly if you were to skip this type of opportunity.

Everyone wants to get the most out of an education. Where and what you study can make all the difference in the career where you end up working. Studying abroad can help you get the most out of an education and help you further down the line in your career.

One advantage of studying abroad is the different ways that different areas teach. Most places teach differently than one another and going to another country can expose you to new styles of learning. There is a good chance that a new style of learning will help you learn new things and even help you see things you have already learned from a new perspective.

Studying abroad also gives you the opportunity to learn about a different culture, lifestyle, and possibly even learn a new language. While these things can potentially help you down the line, they are also simply good in themselves. It is always exciting to learn about other cultures, especially through first-hand experience. Also, second languages are helpful in several career fields.

Another advantage of studying abroad is the good impression it can have on a potential employer. In many fields, it is seen as a big advantage to study abroad. Most potential employers will give more consideration to you if they see that you have studied overseas.

Studying abroad can be scary for some people. But, the advantages are ones that can help for an entire lifetime. The opportunity to study abroad has recently be made much more of an option for many more people, and you should take advantage of the opportunity it presents for you.

The college experience is meant to be learning and growing endeavor where one gathers knowledge. What better way to gather knowledge than to learn by studying abroad?

Be realistic for a minute. The year’s after college are hopefully going to be filled with a job, a partner, a better car, a house and probably some kids. Once the demands of a full-time job and other responsibilities engulf your life, the chances of taking a trip to some far off destination are probably years and maybe decades away.

The list of advantages of studying abroad is lengthy.

• Learning a new language: In a tough and competitive job environment, it’s important to have multi-lingual skills at your fingertips. A second language opens up different opportunities and increases a college graduates hireability. A second language, or even seeing another part of the world generally focuses young people on their long-term goals.

• Learning a different culture: For many the college year’s are about trying new things and getting to understand different points of view. What better way to hear and see what other cultures are thinking and doing by taking a year to study in a different part of the world?

• Interpersonal skills: One of the biggest challenges in jobs and careers is dealing with customers and clients and even co-workers. A trip abroad improves general communication skills and again makes the studier a better hire.

• Have some fun: The years after college are going to be filled with plenty of non-fun activities. As the years go by, the responsibilities increase exponentially. Studying abroad can be a great way to try new things and open new doors.

Honeymoons used to mean sun, sand, and possibly a little surf. The ubiquitous beach vacation is relaxing, but doesn’t always fit the bill when it comes to excitement. For the couple that is looking for adventure to help celebrate their vows, ski holidays are a great way to go. A lively expedition can bring a couple closer together, particularly if they are trying something new and exhilarating.

Plan Ahead

Honeymooners should make a list of what to bring with them when planning an adventurous trip. Ski Holidays call for plenty of gear, but who wants to drag all that stuff with on a vacation? Most resorts have skis and other gear available for rental for those who don’t want to take tons of luggage with them.

Look For Deals

When a couple is planning their honeymoon, they should remember to look for specials. Some ski resorts offer free lift tickets when a couple makes their reservation early. Other resorts may provide a honeymooner’s package with champagne or other special accommodations.

Remember the Extras

Even though the happy couple isn’t going to be vacationing on a beach, they should still plan to bring swimwear. Many ski resorts have wonderful spas that couples can visit. Of course, a private chalet with its own hot tub wouldn’t require swimwear—certainly something to look into for a honeymoon!

Ski holidays are a great way to observe the newlywed’s vows to each other. There is nothing like an adventurous vacation to bring a loving couple closer together!

Studying abroad is an exciting adventure for students, and being prepared for the adventure makes it even more rewarding. As a student, you already know about preparing for lectures, taking tests, and reading the proper literature required. Students about to study abroad should prepare to learn about the culture, traditions, and people living in the area they will be visiting.

Know the history

Studying the history of a culture or of a people, is not only interesting, but it is a great way to understand what made people who they are today. When you know where your fellow students are coming from, whose culture is wildly different from your own, makes it easier for you to get down to the business of studying.

Read up on traditions

Depending on the time of year you plan to study abroad, reading up on the specific traditions and celebrations taking place while you are there, will help you to join in, and become socially accepted among the resident fellow students.

Learn requirements and standards

Just as people and cultures differ, so do the rules and regulations of institutions abroad. Depending on where you study, there might be certain things you need to know to excel in your studies that deal with how classes and courses count toward a degree you seek.

Seek out public venues and popular attractions

Finally, if you will have free time while you are studying abroad, look for information on places young people go to have fun. Find out where they dine, where they go to see a movie, and where the playhouses or opera houses are, depending on your interests.

Could studying in another country improve your life or career? In the ever increasing global marketplace and economy, having an international education can prove to be the reason you get a job instead of another applicant.

Studying Abroad Opens Doors

There are many outstanding reasons to study in another country. If you are interested in doing so, consider finding the right degree for you from EarnMyDegree.com. You may find an international degree is just better for the career you are interested in, depending your career choices. There are other benefits, too:

Students studying abroad get jobs faster, in some cases. If you have an international education, you are more likely to be valuable to a company expanding overseas.

You have a stronger cultural background. This may translate into understanding other countries and people in unique ways. This will help you to create opportunities for your own business. For example, you can start a website that helps to sell culturally important items or foods.

You develop improved skills. You will have better foreign language skills after studying abroad. You will have better self reliance and confidence as well. Many people learn a great tolerance level for other people’s opinions after exploring different cultures up close.

For those who are struggling with whether there is real value in studying abroad, just consider what it will do for you personally, intellectually, and culturally to be immersed in a new world with new ideas and surroundings. It could help you to see problems and opportunities you would not otherwise see. For many who are unable to choose a career before school, this helps.

Wisdom is an admirable goal, but it is not something you can just pull off of a shelf or order from an online bookseller. Wisdom comes from the application and simplification of knowledge, which takes a lot more than what could be contained within the pages of a book. This is among the most unfortunate and taxing lessons every student has to learn at some point.

Many students find that in the beginning, their home country is just not large enough to teach them what they need to know in order to become wiser. So they begin to travel the globe, hunting for knowledge wherever it might be hiding out. Just keep in mind when it comes to your own travels that sometimes even tiny countries can store great wisdom. As the young student travels outward, sometimes to a university and sometimes just to wander about, life happens. While everyone drifts through this world to an extent, we all catch onto some things that we can carry with us. What you carry begins to define who you become as your wisdom grows.

When your footsteps begin to echo with greater wisdom, you will find that it becomes easier for you to understand what was once extremely cloudy and confusing. Over time, you may even find out that what you used to believe was the height of wisdom was in fact a ridiculous fallacy. At that point, you will not need to travel the globe anymore if you don’t want to. Once you reach a certain level of wisdom, you can find this wisdom no matter where you are, while doing anything.

Going out of state for college can be pretty rough. For one thing, it’s more expensive, both for tuition and to travel home for the holidays. For another thing, it’s a pretty clean cutoff from the people you leave behind. This is a part of growing up, and you just have to push through it. Considering the way the corporate world is these days, you might just end up working in another country, so you’ve got to be adaptable.

Take Chicago apartments, for instance. Chicago is the kind of city that people all over the world want to visit because it’s massive and stuffed with opportunities to do pretty much anything you can imagine. If you can think about it, you can find a way to try it there. But you have to prepare yourself, both mentally and logistically, if you’re going to be successful as a stranger in a strange land. Not only do you need to be self-reliant. You also have to be adaptable.

Being out of state means you are on your own. Nobody you knew in your old life is going to be around to help you, no matter what happens. So you had better have a cash hoard you can fall back on in an emergency. You had also better get to work making friends where you are. It’s a known fact that people who have social ties are happier and do better, and not just because they have someone else to lean on when times get tough. The first major challenge is in your mind. Once you win that battle, the rest of the war is easy.

Today, studying abroad is a dream of many students. There are many factors that should be considered while opting studying abroad such as course offered, locale, any opportunity for traveling, learning any new foreign language, obtaining skills related to profession, and opportunity for the cross cultural experiences. Here are few important things that should be considered before committing to study abroad.

The first consideration is the budget or expenses to complete the study. Some college provides coverage for some amount of fees but students have to take care of other expenses such as daily foods and shopping. These expenses can be expensive and therefore it is a must for the students to have some plan to handle the expenses.

Another great consideration is being far away from the loved ones. Study abroad is not the right choice for the students who feel home sick because they have to leave their friends and family to complete their studies. To avoid getting home sick, it is best to interact with many people in the foreign country and make friendship with them.

Next thing to consider is the timeframe for completing the course. Many foreign graduate programs are available in the accelerated and concentrated forms. This helps the students to complete the course sooner and this way they can even save a lot of money along with completing the course.

Above all, major consideration is to research the coursework and universities in the foreign country before choosing one. It is always better to choose a course that is accredited. Studying abroad is a major step and one should choose it after careful consideration.

A cruise is a vacation experience rather than a vacation destination. They offer more than just a lounge chair in a sunny spot and an all-you-can-eat buffet. Cruise deals capitalize on the concept that travelling should be fun. While relaxing is a satisfying way to spend the time, there are many other enjoyable activities that will appeal to families.

The sparkling blue waters of pools offer an enticing chance to swim. Adventure awaits at the rock wall. A dance floor gives you the space to feel the music or learn some basic steps. Grab an intense workout out in the gym to burn off calories from that endless buffet. Fill your desire for food with a different variety of tastings. Play the odds with a trip to the casinos where you win even if you lose.

If relaxation is more your style, check out the spa. Seek out the ship’s library for some quality time with a book. Relieve your mind with a trip to the Internet cafe to check up on email.

The Cruise lines offer exciting activities for children as well. From crafts, games, and sports, the activities are geared toward age appropriate activities. They are well supervised by staff members who are trained to help the kids get the most out of their vacation.

Don’t forget to explore the port when the ship docks. Explore the surrounding city or take a scenic tour. Soak in some of the local culture of the islands, and shop for exotic souvenirs that will make your friends envious.

A cruise is an adventure and a vacation all wrapped up into one.

Study Abroad Aspects to Consider When Selecting a College or University

High-quality education must encourage students to thinking outside their nearby surroundings and an increasing amount of employers seek applicants that have world experiences. When deciding on a college or university, it is important to inquire about travel opportunities.

Travel opportunities are not always semester or year-long study abroad programs. Many institutions offer courses that schedule short trips during breaks in terms.

Things to Consider:

How many study abroad opportunities does an institution offer and are students able to study in various regions around the world or are options narrow? Many reputable universities offer an abundance of study abroad options in all areas of the globe.

What is the amount of students studying abroad? Understanding the percentage of students that study abroad can give insight to how an institution values travel and culture.

Do course credits earned in study abroad programs easily transfer? It is necessary to ensure time spent studying abroad does not interfere with graduate time. Does the institution have international branch campuses? Branch campuses can offer various perks when compared to other study abroad programs. Examples include financial aid, smooth billing processes, and course credits easily transferring. Various branch campuses are very successful including the Rome campus of the University of Dallas.

What is the funding for study abroad programs? Are students eligible for financial aid for study abroad programs and will international tuition costs be significantly more than staying at the home institution?

Do various courses have travel components? Many institutions offer courses that travel to various countries. For example an international business course that travels to Europe.

Many students ask themselves if deciding to study abroad is the right choice. Often times studying abroad is a life-altering opportunity and it is necessary to consider all factors and create an effective plan.

When deciding to study abroad students should consider three primary areas: academic, financial, and personal aspects to make a well-informed and effective choice.

1. Academic

• Academic success is the primary reason students are enrolled in higher education institutions. It is important to consider how study abroad experiences will influence the completion of a degree.

• For many students studying abroad can provide great assistance or it may pose challenges for others. For example, students pursuing a major in French would greatly benefit from spending an academic term in France. On the contrary, a pre-medical student spending time away from laboratory classes can pose challenges.

• The good thing about studying abroad is many programs are flexible and students can choose to summer programs if studying abroad is not feasible during the fall and spring semesters.

2. Financial

• Every institution deals with costs for study abroad programs differently and establishes policies to protect students and the institution.

• Students must decide if they wish to only pay the tuition costs of their home institution or if they are willing to pay increased costs.

• Students must also take into account how they will need to manage their finances due to the possibility of not being eligible to work in a foreign country.

3. Personal

• Students must decide if they are personally able to pursue a study abroad program. They must consider how they will handle being away from friends and family and if there are any medical issues that come into play.

Study abroad programs are often categorized by their sponsors, such as the institution or situation that directed the creation of the program. The primary sponsors of study abroad programs include a U.S. college or university and a host university.

1. U.S. College and University Sponsors

Various popular study abroad programs are sponsored by an institution located in the United States, such as the student’s home school, another U.S. college or university, or by a group of U.S. institutions.

These types of programs are created to enable students to pursue academic studies in an international environment while staying within a United States academic structure. The transfer of credit is set-up by the sponsoring institution and these types of programs usually abide by traditional United States academic calendars.

The U.S. institution also helps with room and board arrangements and may organize cultural activities and experiences.

Study abroad programs that are sponsored by U.S. colleges and universities typically include international branch campuses and study centers.

2. Host University

Numerous colleges and universities in the United States have long-standing partnerships with international institutions to enable direct exchange between students. Students are able to enroll in courses as visiting students while paying the same tuition rates as their home institution. Direct exchange partnerships are made possible through agreements that regular transfer of academic credit and financial aid between the institutions. It usually involves a one-to-one ratio where the number of incoming and outgoing exchange students must be equal.

Direct enrollment programs are intended for more independent students and international students directly enroll in courses with local students. These programs do not require agreements between institutions and students must pay tuition directly to the host institution. Transfer of credits is also not automatic or guaranteed.

Online collaboration is defined as technology that enables a group of people to work together over the Internet in real-time. Individuals can work together using a variety of programs such as PowerPoint presentations, word processor documents, media files, and brainstorming activities without having to be in the same location at the same time. It enables individuals to work together from various regions around the world and provides and easy and effective way to complete projects in a more time efficient manner.

Difference from Web Conferencing

Online collaboration differs from web conferencing in that a web conference allows individuals to meet online in real-time, similar to a meeting that occurs face-to-face. A web conference involves more of a discussion rather than working together on presentation documents. Online collaboration typically involves working as a team simultaneously on the same documents in addition to exchanging ideas back and forth.

Features of Online Collaboration Tools

Main characteristics of online collaboration tools include easy access and set-up, high security, and features that meet the intended purpose.

Specific purposes will vary depending on the different tasks. For example, if a team wants to conduct online brainstorming sessions it is essential to select a collaboration tool that has effective whiteboard functionality.

Other useful aspects include a calendar, email notifications when a document is changed, and the ability to upload various documents.

Security of Online Collaboration

All dependable online collaboration tools include security characteristics that make sure individuals that are not invited to specific workplaces are not allowed to access documents. Most tools provide encryption techniques, which provide an additional security level that makes documents unable to be read by individuals with negative objectives.

Secure online collaboration tools enables users of workspaces to create authorization levels for its intended participants.

Study abroad programs involve a variety of costs including tuition and student fees, room and board fees, fees for passports and visa, medical insurance, and transportation fees. The policies of financing study abroad programs vary among higher education institutions in the United States, but financial aid is often available and includes federal grants and federal student loans.

To receive any type of financial aid students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Federal Grants

The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunities Grant (SEOG): this grant is awarded on a need basis to students that show a high financial need. Students generally have to qualify for the Federal Pell Grant to be eligible for the SEOG Grant.

The Pell Grant: this grant is a need-based grant and students must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) must be below a specific limit that is determined annually.

Federal Loans

Federal Perkins Loan: a low-interest loan, typically 5% that is granted to students that show the greatest financial need.

Federal Stafford Loan: a loan in the name of a student that is available to all students, no matter the financial needs. There are subsidized and unsubsidized types of this loan. Payment of the principle amount does not start until six months post graduation for both types of this loan as long as students stay enrolled on at least a half-time basis, which is a minimum of six credits per academic term.

The subsidized type means the government pays the interest of the loan while the student is in school.

The unsubsidized type means students are able to pay the interest on a quarterly basis while attending school or they can capitalize the interest.

3. Parent PLUS Loan for Undergraduate Students: this loan enables parents to borrow up to the complete cost of the student’s education, minus the amount of other financial aid.

Studying abroad involves students completing educational experiences in a foreign country. It is most common among students pursuing post-secondary education, but an increasing amount of opportunities are available for primary and secondary education.

As stated by the Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange, during the 2008-2009 academic school year approximately 260,327 students in the United States studied abroad.

Typically students from the United States select short-term study abroad options that are completed within one to two academic terms. Individuals traveling to the U.S. from another country generally stay to complete a full academic degree.

Study Abroad Trends

The most common countries U.S. students choose study abroad programs in are the United Kingdom, China, France, Spain and Italy. An increasing amount of U.S. students are also choosing less traditional countries where English is not the native language. Examples of increasingly host countries include South Africa, Argentina, Denmark, Chile, Czech Republic, South Korea, and Costa Rica. Countries that are decreasing in popularity include India, Mexico, and Austria.

Program Types

One-Month Summer Programs: students learn the basic concepts of a particular field of study and are generally not required to be proficient in the native language of the country. Students typically live with American roommates.

Semester or One-Term Programs: students commonly choose specific subjects to receive credit based on one academic term. They may complete courses from a U.S. college or those offered by a local institution. Students commonly live with other American roommates.

Full-Year Programs: students gain a more in-depth understanding of particular subjects and typically need to have advanced linguistic proficiency of the host language. Students usually complete courses from a local university and participate in service-learning and professional internship opportunities. They also commonly live with a host family.

Study abroad programs in various areas of the world are expected to continue to increase to provide an array of higher education opportunities to a wide range of international students.

We are living in a world that has grown smaller with each passing year. Time and technology has created an environment in which it is possible for the smallest of businesses to operate on a global scale. The internet, email and instant messaging means developing business or personal relationships now knows no boundaries. It is precisely because of this that those who have studied abroad are seeing an increased value in their degrees.

Traveling and studying abroad increases the value of a college degree for several reasons. The first is, of course, the value of global exposure. It can provide the student with contacts and networking abilities that they might otherwise miss out on. Developing ties throughout the world can lead to job possibilities as well as lifelong friends. The contacts a student makes during their year abroad will last a life time.

A semester or more studying in a foreign country can also provide the student with a greater understanding of culture, language and history. Together, these three knowledge areas can help create a better understanding of the world at large. Developing an appreciation for other languages and cultures can also help a student appreciate their own unique cultural differences.

Students who study abroad, especially those who take the time to travel during their studies, develop life skills that can assist them in every aspect of their life. From money management to self-care, every step of a semester abroad helps develop much needed skills for the student.

Studying abroad isn’t so much about the class work. It is about the exposure to other people and cultures. It can help develop skills, friends and abilities that the student will be able to rely on for the rest of their lives.

Study abroad is about much more than sitting in a classroom – it’s about learning from the world.

There are millions of international students that come to the United States each year to learn and to attend school. This has always been a big trend for wealthy Asian students, but now is reaching out to many middle class European students as well. The process of having an international student is complicated and lengthy, but once all the paperwork is complete, it can be one of the best experiences a student has ever had. For any International student, whether they are coming to America, or another country, the proper papers must be filed. This means that transfer visas, student visas, and resident visas must all be submitted and approved prior to leaving for the destination. If not completed, a student could find themselves dealing with immigration and criminal charges.

There are organization present that help with the process of all this paperwork, and they even help with housing assistance so that these students have a place to stay while studying. Many Americans open up their homes each year to accommodate exchange students, or International students, and many other families do the same to assist American students. If interested in the exchange program, many students have already had years worth of language classes to help assist in the experience and transition of the new country that they will be living in for some time. The length of time is usually about a year, and most students have one or two exchange opportunities before they enter college. Once in college, students can opt to attend all of their college career in another country, and the same companies that assist with paperwork for the secondary exchange programs, also help with the college work as well. They will also assist with living arrangements. The one key is that many foreigners are not allowed to have work visas.

There are so many fantastic new additions to the world of education. In fact, one of the biggest life changers for students world wide is the web, and having internet access. This has changes that way we learn, how students interact, and how teachers find out information that can help their students succeed. The beneficial aspect to this is unlimited, and because this information is usually free, students and web surfers alike are able to access just about anything they want within seconds. This has been the biggest change for classrooms as well. The days of eight hours a day in a class are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Now, students can enjoy the same high quality education, but with a web enhanced class or purely online.

For those that want their education in the shortest amount of time possible, the internet is for you. Online classes can encompass topics from engineering to nursing. This allows students of a multitude of studies come together and learn their specific field without ever leaving their homes. This is a fantastic development even for the medical students who are able to complete observations of new procedures online. While this type of setting may not work for everyone, the trend is that this is what the face of education will look like across the board; including primary and secondary grade students. There is already an aggressive move for relocating schooling for children to the online environment, and allowing them to work at home, while supplementing their education with extracurricular activities through local school districts. This has received attention from the state boards of education, and some school districts are developing their own set of online classes that students can opt for. This save time and money for school districts, and allows students to spend more time learning in an independent environment.

We all know the power of obtaining a college degree. The simple fact is that people who have earned degrees get hired faster, make more money and build better lives. It stands to reason that one degree will take you just so far in the business world. That’s why going for an MBA or PhD in your chosen field is a perfect way to power up your degree and take your career to the next level. Once you’ve researched the possibilities of advancing your education you’ll discover that before you can be accepted into any MBA program you’ll need to pass the Graduate Management Admissions Test or GMAT.

Basically, the GMAT is a test to see how you can take tests. It’s the standard used to determine what level you are at in terms of taking on graduate course work. Everybody who goes for an MBA has to take the GMAT. No exceptions. That means you’re not alone. It also means you have resources that are just a mouse click away. An online GMAT prep course is the best method to get your ready to take the test. This is not a test you want to go into without preparation.

One of the primary benefits of a GMAT prep course is having the three areas of the test broken down to understandable concepts. You’re going to be tested on verbal, quantitative and essay skills. There is no reason to be intimidated by those questions when you’ve gone through a proper prep course. With the GMAT prep you’ll be able to get direct answers to any questions from the online instructors. If practice makes perfect, then practicing sample GMAT questions is really going to give you an advantage when it comes time to take the actual test. Furthering your education is too important to leave to guess work!

Are you looking for a way to obtain a higher degree or even complete one that you started years ago? Are you employed full-time or perhaps you work and have family responsibilities? Maybe you live in a relatively rural area that is far away from the nearest educational institution, making attending classes a virtual impossibility.

However, distance and schedules are no longer an impediment to getting your degree. This is because of the advent and increasing popularity of online degree programs. These programs will allow you to study at universities, colleges and schools located miles away from your home — even in a different country.

There are other positive reasons for looking into these types of degree programs.

You will learn at your own pace. Many learners may not do well at a traditional brick and mortar, lecture-type scenarios. With online learning you can set the pace of your coursework and learning. You will be able to use your time management skills, as well as coursework that is less stressful. You may want to go faster or slower than some students. You have the freedom to pace yourself to your best learning style.

Traditional colleges and university class schedules are rigid and non-flexible. There is also the problem of taking time off during a course of study due to personal, business or family issues. With online learning options, you’ll be able to schedule your coursework as it best fits your schedule. Because these courses are usually online and do not involve a live instructor, you can take these courses when they fit best suit you.

Should you have online coursework that does involve a live instructor or other students, you’ll be able to have more communication options than you would sitting in a large, dark lecture hall. You’ll be able to email, instant message and engage in other forms of communication that will enhance the learning process.

There has been a study completed that showed that students who studies abroad tends to have a higher level of communication, and can adapt well to new situations. This is partly due to the fact that traveling for studies forces a student to quickly adapt to their new environment while not sacrificing the learning that they are there to achieve. For language learners this is especially true because there is usually a massive learning curve that can affect their transition time. This means that students have to be very resilient to change and therefore are able to handle the proverbial curve ball that is thrown their way in life. For many state side colleges and universities this means that students will have a tendency to succeed in their studies, and many universities will take preference for foreign studies students over local students. This is a debatable process, but many have found that students like this have multi-lingual skills, and have very high success and completion rates; both vital aspects for universities.

There are many facilitators of international studies programs, and many are available via online services. This means that a student is not dependent upon their local school district or teacher to organize the study trip. This also means that there is a separate service that is facilitating work loads, classes, and level at which the classes are to be taken in order to allow the student transition time and enable them to continue with his or her educational goals. This means though that a student may find themselves in a remedial subject if there is a language barrier, or with a mentor to help tutor often. These aspects are never optimal, but they are available so that students can have the freedom of travel without the fear of risking their education. This is actually the philosophy of many students that travel to the United States for their education, and is a common philosophy that is shared globally.

Imagine drinking beer, eating pizza, or sitting in your underwear at the computer while learning about Michelangelo, Nietzsche, or how to use Scheme for programming computers. In a digital nutshell, that’s online education for you! Sound like fun?

Make no mistake: it is.

It’s so much fun that you would think there’s no preparation involved. After all, you don’t need to buy textbooks, which save you money (the information you need would be online). Forget about buying supplies such as pencil and paper (again, would be available online) or even a car (again, online). You never have to leave the house. You sit in your bed, even with the TV on, and you can literally obtain a degree, for most programs, as fast as six months.

However…. There are some important ins and outs to keep in mind. When investigating the pursuit of an online degree, notice that there are several schools these days that exist. Online degrees are now literally like your conventional degrees; you have choices. The top schools are as follows: Kaplan University, American Intercontinental University, University of Phoenix, Liberty University, Ashford University, Everest, Walden University, Saint Leo University, and Arizona State University. You’ll find, surprisingly, that there’s no discipline unavailable online. Wherever your talents take you–be it medicine, humanities, engineering, science–online education can now take you. Moreover, all you need to know is how to use e-mail, checking web sites for your materials, homework, updates, and course notes, plus dates on when to finish tests or papers–all of it done online!

That’s the rage of the future, folks. Learn these ins and outs, and then you can be on your way to the next step: following your dreams. There’s no corner of the world your education can’t touch with an online degree. Simply imagine the possibilities….

There are many opportunities for learning, and many are not just limited for the classroom or the online environment. In fact, many world cultures classes provide opportunities for students to learn either abroad, or to prepare for a travel expedition that will help to solidify the learning content. For example, once a student has completed the fourth year of a foreign language class, they are eligible to go to the country that is home to the learned language or culture studied. There are some exceptions however, in that countries that are unsafe, in the middle of war, or do not have safe travel passage for American students will not be conducted.

For students, travelling is the best way to truly apply what they have learned. In fact, for most language students it is the only way to fully use and comprehend their language skills that they have learned in class. Some linguists suggest that after a student has completed their maximum amount of education with their new language skill, that they should consider spending a full two months in that country of language in order to solidify the language learned. This is the only way a student can see the language in action, and be forced to have constant use. This process is called immersion, and while students have taken many years or classes for their new language, there is no better education than immersion into a foreign country and language.

As far as learning about cultures, this is the most interesting aspect that students learn about. In fact, once students see how people interact, and how different their actions are to the American culture, they are able to develop an appreciation for that foreign culture and people group. This is an important aspect for students as they begin to identify and understand the culture they have been studying. Like language learning, being immersed into a new culture is the truest way to fully comprehend all of the learned materials from their classroom experiences.

There is a new component of online learning for students that are interested in global studies and foreign language. The integration of the internet into studies has opened doors that once cost a decent amount of money, was time consuming, and required extensive travel. Today, students are able to collaborate and communicate idea via the internet. This means that they are able to gain the same type of quality educationany time of day, and students are not limited to travel in order to have a fulfilling experience with their education. For many students this also means that there is constant communication from other individuals around the world, and this communication is not just valuable, it creates life long friendships.

Many students are interested in this type of collaboration because they are able to instantly have a platform for communication, which means that learning, and research results are concluded much faster than if a student had to travel, or wait for mail correspondence. This creates a unique situation that until approximately a decade ago, would have been thought impossible. This high speed communication is now enabling students to learn an expanded array of informational sets, and therefore can master certain areas of study in a relatively short amount of time. For colleges and educators, this means that curriculum can be enhanced, and since educators also collaborate with others abroad, the information can remain accurate. This is a vital aspect for education, as technology grows, details about certain topics have to include new points of interest in order to remain on the cutting edge. This also helps students master the most up to date information possible as the quick response allows students to incorporate new facets in the blink of an eye without altering their original course of study. This saves time and money, and does not take anymore effort than going online. The internet has truly change the face of education, how we learn, and how fast we can include new data and statistics for the most accurate mastery possible.

International students are not just students that travel to the United States in order to learn, but include students from the United States to other countries. This is a way for many students to learn about other cultures, languages, and learning habits while completing their schooling for their home countries graduation requirements. One of the biggest tasks to overcome while being an international student is the language barrier. While is may sound fun to go to Europe to finish your senior year of high school, if you can not speak the language somewhat proficiently, then you will not learn much except that you are very frustrated. There are online companies that help students become linguistically prepared for studying abroad.

Tutoring sites like Idapted have incorporated a Rosettastone-esque type of approach in helping students become prepared for their host country. This includes helping to prepare for idioms, slang, and even cultural background that would help the student excel in their studies. While there is much that will still need to be learned while being abroad, which is kind of the point of going, there is a lot of preparation that can be done prior to leaving. Much of this can be handled with companies that organize international travel for students, and many of these groups also organize the plan for families to review prior to beginning the process.

Many students investigate the costs of international travel, but many negate to investigate the rules and the living arrangements while studying internationally. The rules are quite rigorous, and include mandatory study times, curfews, and even bed times. This means that while students are in another country, they are required to be just students, and nothing more. It does not give license for citizenship, employment, or acceptance into social organizations. This is true of any student studying abroad in any country, including the United States. It is best to fully read the regulations before applying, as many have found the rigorous expectations to be too difficult to fully accept.

You would not think it, but studying abroad is one of the best ways to develop business opportunities for after your college career. Students who study abroad benefit in two distinct ways. The first is the development of a global network which can be helpful when it comes time to find a job. The second is the value a semester abroad can add to a college degree or resume. Studying abroad is fun and exciting. It is also good for you.

Students who study abroad almost automatically develop a larger network of contacts throughout the world. Many of the schools in which students study abroad accept students from all over the world. This introduces the student to individuals which very well may become lifelong acquaintances and friends. It stands to reason that when it comes time to apply for a position students with this larger network of acquaintances can easily find someone in their network to assist them. This assistance may come in the form of job leads, recommendations or even job offers.

Employers like employees who have studied abroad. A semester two abroad develops skills within the student that are beneficial in the work place. A greater understanding of world culture, more rounded life skills and an introduction to travel can help create a graduate who is self confident, knowledgeable and often better suited to the workforce. Students who opt to study abroad are doing more than experiencing the world they are developing a set of skills that will impact the rest of their lives.

Many college students decide to go abroad just to have some fun. They do not realize just how much 20 short weeks can change who they are and their qualifications. Every student with the opportunity to spend a semester or more abroad should consider doing so

If studying abroad is an exciting aspect of many students’ college careers. It exposes the student to different cultures, offers them the opportunity to meet people from the global community and continues their education in the field of their choice. While many colleges and universities have a well developed foreign studies programs a student safety is not guaranteed. Unfortunately there’s a series of common problems faced by students who choose to study overseas.

The first problem most students encounter is the language barrier. Even students with several years of foreign language courses often find themselves struggling with native speakers. For this reason it is critical to carefully consider which country you are opting to study in. If you do not have strong foreign language skills is important to consider a country whose native language is English.

The second problem is a matter of legalities. Many students do not take the time to understand local laws and customs. They do not understand that while they are still studying in a foreign country the laws and regulations of that country must be followed. It is important students who have decided to study abroad take the time to understand the differences and laws that they will be faced with.

The third problem is a matter of finances. While most American colleges and universities with study abroad programs work diligently to keep costs similar to a semester at home they cannot control how expensive travel and the extras can cost. Students who are planning on studying abroad must carefully review their finances and develop a budget that includes money for additional travel, souvenirs and the fun stuff.

There are other problems faced by students as well. Students and parents are encouraged to develop a network of friends and administrators in order to ensure that a trip is a successful as it can be

If you’re going abroad to study for one or more semesters is important that you consider what additional travel you can include during your time abroad. One of the most important aspects of a semester abroad has nothing to do with the time spent in the classroom. The additional travel a student takes during their semester abroad plays a very large role in how successful their semester abroad can be. There is a direct correlation between travel and education as it applies to foreign studies.

While a student is studying abroad they will spend a good deal of time in a traditional classroom setting. They’ll take classes in history, literature and philosophy. They can also take these classes at home. What makes a difference is the travel the student experiences during their trip.

It is common practice for students who are studying abroad to spend several weeks to several months traveling to other cities and countries. It is in this way that they are exposed to different cultures, foods, art, history and more. This travel is almost as educational at the time spent a classroom. It helps develop an interest in global culture and builds life skills within the student that can be invaluable.

For those looking for a more definitive reason to travel while studying abroad, consider history. Whether you’re a history major not, an understanding of history and the impact it has on society is critical for success. Studying history and visiting historical sites throughout the country or continent can help solidify the lessons learned from those dusty old textbooks.

You cannot separate travel and study when you consider a foreign studies program. Study abroad programs work because these two elements blend together to create an experience which helps educate the student, develop their life skills and polish their personality.

One thing many students do not consider while preparing to study abroad is what to do with their downtime. While it is true that it is possible to spend all of your free time the local bar getting to know the locals, there is a better way to spend the extra time you have while traveling abroad. One of the most effective and life changing things a student can do is use their extra time to volunteer. Students can volunteer for local charities, work as an intern or find other sponsored programs which will allow them to use their skills to help others.

Finding a volunteer experience during your foreign studies travel is often a simple matter of working closely with the guidance department of your college and university. They may have information on available opportunities which will allow you to volunteer their time and expertise while abroad. Some students opt to travel to another country once the formal education portion of their trip has been completed. These students often volunteer to help teach English to other students but there are other volunteer opportunities as well.

Some students look for an intern position in conjunction with their time abroad. Again this can typically be arranged through your guidance counseling office. It is a good idea to include interning when possible for students who are primarily interested in developing networking contacts for future employment opportunities.

Volunteer programs are beneficial in another way as well. They look good on a resume. Students who include volunteering during their time abroad can honestly state that they have develop life skills and an understanding of charity and compassion.

If you are planning on studying abroad take a few moments to consider what volunteer opportunities may be available to you. Volunteering may be the perfect way to complete your trip.

It is important to recognize that a big part of studying abroad is just that studying. Many students focus exclusively on the fun they will have while abroad and fail to adequately plan for the real purpose of their travels, continuing their education. While it is difficult to hit the books in a foreign country it is also important. Students are encouraged to remember that in spite of the travel, culture and new friends they must also plan adequate study time.

One mistake students make is planning their extra travel too far in advance. It is a good idea to create generalized plan for additional travel but to wait to confirm these plans until the first week of class. In this way it is possible to develop a plan that includes fun and travel while still focusing on the important aspect of studying.

Another common mistake is letting the new experiences, people and places overwhelm the student. Many find themselves struggling several weeks into their trip to balance fun and work. In this it is not unlike the freshmen year of a typical college student. While eating out, making new friends in spending time at the local pub are important aspects of your trip, if you are not careful you can quickly find yourself failing your classes?

Students are encouraged to develop a plan of study one that allows them adequate time for reading, homework in studying. It is a good idea to actually schedule this time and to force yourself to stick to it. It can be difficult to sit in your dorm and read an old book, but that is what you’re there for.

Try to find a balance between work and play. One that allows you to experience everything your foreign country has to offer while still being successful in your studies.

You like Italy. You consider yourself an expert on all things Italian. Your favorite restaurant, the Leather Bottle, specializes in Italian cuisine. You have an Italian flag on your car and had even taken two whole classes on the language. Surely you’re an expert on Italian culture –right?

The truth is there a lot of students who think they are experts on their favorite culture. Most are really not experts. In fact in order to become a true expert on a given culture one must actually immerse themselves in that culture. That’s an expensive proposition. Spending three months in a foreign country could literally break the bank. It is for this reason that many students are turning to study abroad to learn about more than just academics, they’re learning about culture.

The best way to learn about culture is to live it and the most affordable way to do that, at least for a student, is by studying abroad. Students who choose to spend a semester or more in a foreign country have the ability to not only further their education but to learn about the whole culture of a given nation.

When students study abroad they are exposed to more than simply foreign professors. Instead their world becomes one of true ethnic food, real friendships with the natives and exposure to cultural events. There simply is no other way to gain a true understanding and appreciation of a foreign country and its culture.

Exposure to a new culture will not only deepen the students respect for it, it will also broaden the horizons of every student who experiences it. Once a student begins to more fully appreciate another culture they begin to have insight into how other people live and have different cultures blend together to create a separate that is our world.

There are many reasons a student should consider studying abroad. The most important may very well be the life skills a semester or more abroad can teach you. These life skills are about more than simple academic credits. They will enrich your life through new friends, employment opportunities and a greater understanding of the world. Even better, studying abroad is one of the most affordable methods of traveling to foreign countries.

The truth is, while all students are offered opportunities to expand their horizons and to grow as individuals, perhaps none are as challenged as those who opt to spend a semester or more studying in a foreign country. The life skills learned by students studying in foreign countries will help them define who they are and come to a greater understanding of their desires, abilities and self.

That might sound like a lot of mumble jumble, but the truth is a student will never be as tested as they will be when they begin their first semester overseas. Even those who travel with friends or peers must face a strange new world away from home and family. Most struggle with loneliness and are forced to expand their horizons as they learn to combat this.

Studying abroad also provides students and it with the ability to increase their understanding of the global community. Exposure to ethnic foods, travel, new cultures and even a loss of certain conveniences creates a person who has a greater empathy with people from around the world.

Studying abroad is both exciting and terrifying. Students who experienced this unique brand of fear and excitement are changed. It is one of the best ways to get to know yourself, to change your view of the world and to prepare yourself for your future. It is an experience no student should miss.

Anyone who thinks that they might be interested in studying abroad must apply to and be accepted by a college or university that specializes in sending students overseas for one or more semesters. There are several reasons why this is critical. Finding the perfect college with a well developed overseas study program is the best way to ensure that a student has the college experience of their dreams.

Throughout the country there are many colleges and universities that actively promote overseas studies as part of their bachelor’s program. They believe that the benefits that students reap from a semester or more a broad are invaluable. The best schools understand that the experience, knowledge and contacts students came from a semester abroad will immediately change their future.

The best schools focus on study abroad by preparing their students through seminars and guidance sessions designed to help students pick a country to study in, prepare for their trip and provide them with the knowledge and skills they will need for successful trip. Because of a focus on foreign studies these schools are able to keep the price of a semester abroad just about the same as a semester at home.

While many schools offer an overseas study program there are some that are actually known for how well their program works. Students with an interest in studying abroad should consider one of the following schools:

Lee University

Thomas Moore College of Liberal Arts

California Maritime Academy

Queen’s University of Charlotte

Center College

Austin College

University of Dallas

University of Denver

Loyola University Maryland

Kalamazoo College

All of these colleges and universities send at least 70% of their students abroad to study. Lee University and Thomas Moore College of Liberal Arts send all of them!

Students who are planning on studying abroad are encouraged to plan every aspect of their trip. This will allow them to take full advantage of the experience, will keep them safe and allow them to achieve their goals. There are also several tips that students who are studying abroad should always keep in mind.

The first tip is always keeping safety in mind. This should be always kept at the forefront of students mind. This encompasses much more than simple personal safety. Student’s most adequately plan for protecting their personal belongings including documentation such as their passport and student visas. Security measures must also be taken to secure money. Students should work closely with their adviser to develop a security plan.

Students should also be aware of their status in the country in which they study. A careful review of the laws of the country is important as is an understanding of where to turn for help. This may be as simple as learning the location of the nearest embassy, but maybe a bit more difficult for those without easy access to an embassy.

Students should also be aware of any language barrier. A basic understanding of the local language is important. For those without this knowledge it is important to find an interpreter when one is needed. Failing to prepare adequately to address the language barrier can be disastrous for a student abroad.

Another good tip for students planning to study abroad is the simple act of organization. There’s no way around the fact that studying abroad is exciting and offers the student access to tons of distractions. Adequately planning your time to include study, personal and travel time can make for a safe trip.

Studying abroad can be a fun experience and a beneficial one as well but only for those who take the time to prepare for the trip.

Once you’ve made the decision to study abroad for a semester or more it’s time to begin planning. In a perfect world this would involve little more than throwing together a few outfits, the tourist dictionary and a fistful of cash. Unfortunately students find studying abroad requires a bit more planning than that. Failing to do so can make a semester abroad a semester from hell.

Students should begin their planning by meeting with a guidance counselor. A counselor can help you understand everything you’ll need for successful trip. This will include, that the very least, documentation, registration information, emergency contact information and money. Most schools offer prepatory seminars that cover all of the required information. It is critical that students attend seminars.

Students should also spend some time planning what they would like to do in their free time. This may mean short side trips to local museums or historical spots. It may also mean several weeks or months of backpacking across the continent. Students are encouraged to check into local travel methods such as train and bus schedules and to develop a plan that allows them to travel everywhere they wish within the time they have.

Students should take the time to prepare for the culture in which they will be entering. The language barrier should be considered as should local laws and customs. It is important to recognize that as a foreign student you will still be held accountable to the same laws and customs.

Finally it is important to prepare financially for your trip. Always plan on more money than you think you need. Side trips, train fare and late nights of the local bar can take a serious chunk of their planned finances. It is also a good idea to plan a little bit of emergency money or at least have mom and dad and speed dial

It isn’t enough to decide you want to study abroad –you must also decide where to study abroad. The truth is there are almost an unlimited number of places a student can choose to study. Picking just one can be one of the most difficult decisions a person can make. Students need to take a bit of time to consider their options before picking the perfect country in which to study.

A great way to start cutting down the options is to consider your field of study. In many cases there is an actual correlation between what you are studying and a country. For example, students studying ancient languages may choose to study in Greece or Egypt. Students studying history might prefer England for Germany.

Students who already have some knowledge of a foreign language may wish to study in that county. This is sort of an obvious choice as it totally negates the language barrier issue. Remember it is not important to be fluent in the language but it is helpful to have a basic understanding of it.

For students who do not want to be reasonable about the choice of country there’s always the fun factor. You wanna a lot of sun? Take a Mediterranean country. Those who like to ski should probably pick a country that gets a lot of snow. Fun factor can play a big role in picking a country in which to study.

Back down practical matters, it’s important to consider the security of the country you choose. The United States Department of State clearly issues warnings for countries they consider unsafe for foreign travel. Pay attention to them. It’s also good idea to stick with countries your school or university is currently affiliated with.

You can probably see that taking just one country to study abroad and is almost impossible.

One thing many high school students do not think to consider when attempting to choose a college is whether or not they offer a study abroad program. It is hard to think about spending a semester in Greece or England when you are still safe and snug in high school. Preparing for college, filling out applications and picking classes for your freshmen year makes it all the more difficult to think about the fact that at one point you may very well be interested in a semester or two abroad.

It is for this reason in particular that students should ask their administration department about their study abroad program. Colleges with well developed programs have affiliations with schools throughout the world, making it simple for American students to find safe schools in the countries they are interested in studying in. They also have resources that help students and their parents plan for their time abroad.

More importantly, attending a school with a well developed study abroad program means saving money on the overall cost of a semester at a foreign school. This is because, in most cases, the colleges strive to keep the price of a semester at an affiliated school the same as a semester at home. These same schools also have better financial aid resources that can help students find ways to finance a semester abroad.

In many cases the schools with the best study abroad programs are smaller liberal arts schools. They often have a reputation for their study abroad program and take great pride in sending students abroad for a semester or more and having their trips be safe, successful and productive.

Take a bit of time to think about whether you might want to spend a semester studying overseas. If you think you might, it is important to consider colleges with well developed programs.

Studying abroad is about so much more than simply taking a class in a foreign country. Instead, it encompasses a whole world of experiences. It strengthens a student’s ability to learn, helps develop networking skills, and exposes students to new cultures and new people and so much more. In short, a semester abroad is literally the experience of a lifetime.

Many students make the experience even greater by adding travel and/or volunteering to their overseas experiences. By registering with the overseas college or university of your choice, you can begin the process of developing your overall study abroad plan. Most students find it helpful to begin their plan at the start of their college career – by choosing a college that promotes study abroad. They often have additional resources available to students that can help them create the best possible program.

Take, for example, the student who opts to study ancient languages in Greece for a semester. During the semester the student will have the opportunity to experience the ruins in Athens, travel to the Greek islands and experience other wonders of the area. Once their course is completed, they can travel throughout Europe – for as much or as little time as they wish. Some may wish to add an internship on to their trip.

The experience of studying abroad, when properly planned, can expose students to history in a way they have never before had. Visiting ruins and historical sites allows for new insights. Eating local cuisine and speaking to natives teaches students about culture in a natural and exciting way. The friends, memories and lessons that a student learns during their time abroad cannot be replaced.

Every student with the opportunity should consider including at least one semester abroad. The experience is invaluable and will change a student’s path in life

In a world where education is becoming more and more important, many students, educators and families believe that the only way to successfully complete a bachelors degree (and often the mandatory masters) is to simply barrel through. Many of our students are encouraged to devote their time to their studies and many may be missing out on a unique opportunity – gap year travel.

We aren’t talking about the store here. A gap year, in education terms, is a year (or a semester) in which a student opts out of formal classes for a bit of travel abroad. This may be a formal gap program or a less formal student defined program. Gap year ‘travel’ may include travel through one or more countries, studying in one of more countries or interning abroad. All three of these aspects of gap year programs are beneficial.

While the idea of gap year travel or study originated in Great Britain, an increasing number of students on a global scale are trying to integrate the concept into their education plan. College admissions boards are supporting this trend – especially for students who can clearly show that their gap year program will be beneficial to them during the rest of their college career.

Like anything, it is possible to find an official gap year program online, but many students are opting to work with their college to work out an individual program that is best suited for their particular field of interest.

To be successful, gap year travel should include stops in countries that can provide the student with experiences, information or contacts that they would not otherwise get. Designing a gap year program that includes travel, study and volunteer or intern work can help students develop a greater sense of self while preparing them for college and life beyond.

Who wouldn’t want to spend a semester studying in Greece or England? A few months away from the drudgery of college, parents and ‘regular’ life sounds like the prescription for any college student looking for a bit of change. International studies are a great option for many students. They broaden the horizons of students, teach them about different cultures and languages and often instill a degree of confidence not before experienced by the student. Unfortunately, there are also several disadvantages to studying abroad. Understanding the ‘cons’ as well as the ‘pros’ is crucial for students trying to decide if a semester abroad is right for them.

First, let’s face it, very few of us are inherent geniuses. This means that spending a semester in France isn’t going to make any of use fluent. Many students mistakenly believe that they will just ‘pick up the language,’ as if anyone could learn a language simply by osmosis. Many students find themselves in a foreign country with little to no language skills – making for a tough couple of months.

Second, the best case scenario is that several other students from your college or university are studying at the same school you have chosen. The truth is many students find themselves away from friends and family, completely alone. It isn’t like packing up to stay in the dorm when mom and dad are just a few hours away – you will be pretty much on your own.

Finally, even with scholarships or grants, it is very expensive to study abroad. Many students find themselves unable to afford the ‘extras’ of studying in a foreign country. This makes side trips to the countryside, or more likely the beach or the bar, very unlikely and very frustrating.

Still, many students find that in spite of the disadvantages a semester abroad is a great way to round out their education.

As a student you most likely think that the best advantage a semester abroad can offer is a couple months of fun. While it is true that studying abroad is fun, the truth is there are tons of advantages to spending a semester, or even two, studying abroad. It isn’t just about having fun or even just about studying. An education that includes some international studies will expand your horizons and impact your life in ways you may not have considered.

Obviously, international students are exposed to other languages and cultures. This is helpful as students move into the employment market. Exposure to other languages may improve a student’s speaking ability. Understanding and respecting other cultures may make a student a more viable employment prospect. Any experience that broadens ones understanding of the world is a beneficial experience.

Another benefit of international studies is broadening ones networking base. That is really just a fancy way of saying having more friends and influential people in your life. This is invaluable throughout your life. Your network can help you find employment, help you get settled in a new city – and yes, it can help you have more fun too.

International students also typically have a greater understanding of history, politics and current events. It is simply a lot easier to understand history when you can visit the places where history occurred. This knowledge is invaluable when it comes to understanding the current world, the issues it faces and the politics that rule it.

Perhaps the best way to describe the benefits of international studies is that a semester abroad is a fun way to help create a well rounded student who is prepared to face the world with a greater understanding of people, cultures and themselves. A semester abroad is more than a few months of fun; it is a basis upon which to start a life.

Studying abroad sounds like a great experience – and it is. Unfortunately, many students are denied the opportunity simply because of finances. It is a common misconception that a student must simply be wealthy if they hope to study abroad for a semester or two. This is patently untrue. What a student, without financial means for a semester abroad must do, is research their options carefully and take the time to appropriately plan their trip.

One of the best ways to financially plan a semester abroad is to attend a college or university that offers such a program. In many cases the tuition, room and board and other fees are approximately the same as a regular semester. This often makes planning the financial aspect of a semester abroad much simpler. Colleges and universities that focus on studies abroad offer their students all the information they need during the application process, making it even easier for students to plan their trip.

Financial aid is always an option. While traditional student loans often come with a lot of requirements and ‘strings’ there is generally no regulations preventing students from using student loan funds to finance a semester of studying abroad. Using a student loan to finance a trip is a good idea for students who qualify for them.

Ideally, students without the financial means to finance their own trip will apply for and receive scholarships or grants to study overseas. In many cases a college financial aid office may have information on available grants and scholarships for students to review and apply for. These are probably the best option because they really don’t cost the student anything.

Regardless of how a semester abroad is financed, it can be an invaluable experience for the student. Every student should exhaust all their options before throwing in the towel on their semester abroad.

The world has become a much smaller place. The internet has effectively changed the way that we live, the way we communicate and do business, even the way that we learn. More than ever, the value of studying abroad is becoming apparent. Students who spend one or more semesters abroad are better prepared to face the challenges of this much smaller global world. Today, students have a variety of options if they are interested in studying abroad.

For high school aged students, the long popular foreign exchange student program is still the best option. This program allows high school students to study in a country of their choice for a semester. By living with a host family, students have access to a support system, cultural influences and a degree of safety. Students that successfully complete a semester abroad come away with a better understanding of the world.

College level students have several options available. There are several universities throughout the country with extensive foreign studies programs. These students spend one or two semesters abroad studying at a ‘sister’ school. Conversely, college age student can apply to colleges and universities abroad. This option allows students to complete their education while abroad. College students who study abroad not only have a broader understanding of the world, they have a greater understanding of themselves and a larger community with which to network.

In some cases it may be possible to take a shorter course overseas. These effective seminars last only a few weeks and are a great introduction to foreign studies. Whichever route you choose, studying abroad is a great opportunity and one that will allow you not only appreciate a foreign culture, but to develop a contacts, complete your education and prepare you for a world that is smaller than ever before.

The Oriental wonders, the infinite history — you have forever been inspired by Asia. The influences of its culture, its people, have fascinated you; and you have sought always to learn all of the little details, to chart out all eras. An education has been crafted carefully and you believe you have learned all you possibly can… on your own.

There is a desire to seek out more, however. You wish to immerse yourself in the world you have tried so diligently to understand. Studying abroad therefore seems to be the ideal solution — allowing you to gain the necessary wisdom while echoing the philosophies you have only read about. You now crave an experience, not mere literature.

You worry, however, that no such reward can be found. Choosing a singular Oriental school seems impossible: there are far too many potentials and far too many desires. You believe you could never select only one.

That selection can be made, though. You must simply accept the best.

The University of Hong Kong (established in 1911) is Asia’s premiere organization. It ranks first among all Oriental schools, as well as placing 21st within the entire world. As of 2010 it is the most acclaimed university of the east and represents pure excellence. Students seeking an international education should consider it above all others — especially when the vast variety of majors is understood. The university offers courses in agriculture, social sciences, engineering, law, philosophy and more. All necessary degrees can be earned.

And this is made a far easier thing for American students as the recognized instruction language of the school is English — a reflection of the original founders, the London Missionary Society.

Wishing to seek an Asian education is not the challenge individuals believe it to be. It can instead be achieved by choosing one of the world’s most lauded institutions. Receive the vital knowledge. Earn the wanted experience. Gain the advantage of a lifetime.

Dreary hours and gray skies, the endless pastoral sweeps: it’s an image you can’t ignore, even as you wish to; and it has been haunting your dreams for many months. The chance to study abroad has been offered to you, but your limitation with foreign languages has left you with few options. England seems to be the only decision — but you fret over the infamous weather, the fickle sun. It does not appeal to your need for coastlines and open air. And, while the intention may be to earn an education, you understand that you must also be content during the semester. And the country storms will simply not suffice.

This is why you look to Australia instead — with its golden shores and summer sun. Inspiration will surely come, you believe, when offered so tempting a setting. But you fear the beaches cannot be coupled with the necessary credits. You worry no school can be found there that will satisfy.

You’re wrong.

The Australian National University is available and awaits your arrival.

Ranked perpetually within the top 20 schools worldwide (classified in the sixteenth position as of 2010), the Australian National University is settled in the nation’s capital of Canberra. Founded in 1947 it is one of the few modern universities to earn high prestige within the 21st century. But its commitment to excellence — proven in the endless accolades it has received throughout the years — brands it an ideal institution. And students seeking to study the social and environmental sciences will be rewarded with some of the best programs available.

And this is also to be coupled with easy days and seasonal triumphs. Australia stands as a stark counter to many of the international offerings. It allows students to immerse themselves in nature, rather than huddling within cities, trying to escape the capricious storms. It’s the perfect greeting of education and entertainment; and this makes traveling a far more enticing possibility.

The world is defined to white picket fences, the slant-roof homes and cul-de-sac boundaries. You have dwelled in the suburban kingdom for all of your (admittedly short) life. All borders are known. All faces are recognized. Each day is branded the same as the ones that came before it; and the predictability of it all is exhausting. You want more than your small town can offer. You wanted instead to experience what waits beyond. But this seems to be too great of a challenge. You can think of no way to seek out the wonders you’re certain exist.

Perhaps you should consider studying abroad.

For young adults the desire to learn can be tamed by their own uncertainty. They don’t know where to find the new adventures. They aren’t sure if cultures beyond their own can be sought.

They can — and colleges are available throughout every continent, ensuring that these cultures can all be enjoyed from the corners of classrooms.

Studying abroad offers a plethora of advantages: from the maturity that can be gained to the opportunity to indulge in the best universities, there is much to consider. But the true value that it provides is the chance to understand people. Cities will become schools, teaching religion, philosophy, language and social customs. Students will be allowed to interact with those who are so very different than themselves; and this breeds a greater awareness of the world and its rules.

By choosing to travel for an education all individuals will gain wisdom and compassion. New ideas will be gleaned; new perspectives will be earned. It’s the chance to embrace the uncommon — and this should never be denied.

The ability to examine other cultures, to become immersed in the many customs, is a benefit for all. And those wishing to explore what is tucked beyond their gated communities will be amazed by what they find. There is much more to see than the familiar tedium.

It’s an expectation of parenting — all worries are to be claimed by your father; all concerns are to belong to your mother. There is nothing for you to fret about. There is just the relief that comes from being a child, allowed to do what you please. Responsibility isn’t needed. It’s instead happily ignored, with you indulging in all of the comforts of youth and home. It is a simple thing, you believe, to be a teen; and you intend to take advantage of every second that’s offered to you.

And this is why studying abroad seems like such an adventure: you can discover a new culture; you can learn a different language. It should be ideal… until you realize that your family won’t be traveling with you. You will instead have to fend for yourself.

For many students this is an unfortunate revelation. The notion of being alone, of being forced to take care of themselves, becomes too great of a worry. They have never been separated from their families; they have never had to understand the importance of money and domestic chores. And they become overwhelmed by the possibility of having to suddenly mature.

But this is not to be seen as a flaw in the plan to study abroad. Instead it is to be recognized as a value — the experience earned through traveling, the independence that is found, is essential for all individuals. Students will be offered the chance to change as they study. All lessons will be coupled with good sense. And this will enable them to receive far more from their education than mere facts. They will instead gain the foundations of adulthood: able to understand the world and master it.

Traveling ensures that all individuals will become aware of their own abilities. It’s an exploration in confidence. Students will learn to adapt and succeed. And they will no longer rely on their families for every little victory.

It’s a collection of unfamiliar sounds, the peculiar letters. Vowels are stressed; consonants are slurred; and a mouth is shaped to exaggeration, trying to mimic an accent and failing spectacularly. The desire was to master a foreign language. It was considered admirable, was proven to be wise for the future (the world has become connected, with all continents seeking each other. Conversations must therefore be traded with ease). But you have discovered an unfortunate flaw with your plan — you cannot learn the grammar rules and punctuation by simply reading them from a book.

The pages offer no relief. The words provide no context. You’re unable to understand the phrases and their many meanings; and your goal of listing a language on your resume seems to be an impossible one.

It isn’t.

Too often do students assume that languages must be learned through simple studies; and too often do they discover that this is not a practicality. They need to hear the questions and answers instead. They need to experience the lazy slang. And traveling abroad for an education (even if only for a semester) becomes the ideal solution.

When you are placed within a foreign country — forced to learn quickly, meant to sustain yourself — you become aware of words and their purposes. Fluency becomes a demand. You can spare no time for meager attempts. You can waste no days with silence. Instead you must fling yourself into a culture, echoing all accents and inflections. You become immersed in sounds; and the result is a triumph.

Studying abroad allows all individuals to become aware of languages. They can apply them as locals do, rather than relying on the too prim explanations of books. And this ensures complete comprehension — which was always the intention.

To master languages you must be surrounded by them. Traveling therefore offers the best education. Learn what you need. Experience what you wish. Gain what you never thought possible.

The familiar streets, the remembered pathways: your life is defined to expectations. You have traveled these roads so many times, know every curve, every revelation. All monuments along them have been found. All points of intrigue have been learned. Your home has been memorized and it no longer impresses. You’re seeking new experiences, the unexplored wilds; but such things can’t be found in a smal’l town. All secrets there have been discovered. You want more.

And studying abroad can allow you to have it.
‘t fully understood — individuals assume it to be worthy simply for the cultural introductions, the chance to learn in an international university. While such benefits can’t be denied, they are not the only reasons this idea succeeds. Instead it provides the chance to explore countries, rather than just the immediate campuses.

While studying abroad individuals will find themselves centered among the most famed cities of the world. While these are meant to be enjoyed, they offer more than collections of steel and stone. They are instead located among history — endless towns, villages and landmarks can be sought simply by exiting the walls. Students will be offered access to the past, with distances conquered easily and new pleasures found.

Traveling during the semester is a simple thing: all can schedule their classes wisely, offering time throughout the week to move within the meters. These areas are filled to unexpected delights — and all can be searched for. This enhances the learning experience, ensuring that more than a classroom is seen. Instead an entire country can be glimpsed (which is an invaluable reward).

Studying abroad offers an education that can’t be denied. No longer will you be forced to remain inside, gleaning all adventures from books. Instead you can seek out the endless possibilities that surround a campus. History can finally be found.

In a lifetime of poor choices — the impulsive moments, the too quick agreements — you think this was possibly the worst: you agreed to study abroad, wished to seek out new cultures and new experiences. It was to be an adventure, an easy joy. But it has instead proven to be a disaster: you’re alone in a foreign country, unable to form connections due to a barrier of sound, unable to indulge in a city due to a fear for safety. There is no one to speak with and no one to confess your worries to. You’re without your family, the distance too great to bridge. And this was a… mistake.

Traveling for an education appeals to all — it promises excitement, intrigue, the chance to explore the world. And all of these assurances, it must be noted, are true. But there is also a concern that follows those advantages, and individuals must be aware of more than just their own glee. They must instead recognize the potential loneliness.

Families will be far away. Friends will be forgotten. All traces of home will disappear, left behind as you reach another country. You will be separated from all you know (and love). And for some this will be too much to bear. The connections they desperately rely on will be strained — divided by time zone differences and endless miles. There will be no simple conversations. There will be no easy chats. Instead all words will have to be carefully scheduled, shaped to impersonal email or distorted web cameras.

Studying abroad guarantees discomfort. Individuals will be without the relationships they’ve come to expect. This can lead to depression, anger and regret: sensations that will taint the experience. It’s vital therefore that all students recognize the potential complications. These worries are real and can be damaging.

Traveling is meant to be ideal. It can instead, however, be lonely. Understand the risks before agreeing to the terms.

Dollars are rare. Pennies are scarce. The economy doesn’t favor you or your middle-class concerns: this is a fact you could never deny (even as you have often tried to). Every cost must instead be calculated. Every expense must be understood — and bartered down, slicing away all extra cents. You save all you can. You spend only what you must. And your bank account is still a sad reflection of a distinct lack of funds.

Studying abroad therefore seems to be impossible.

Seeking out a foreign country has forever been your desire. The notion of traveling to receive an education (experiencing both history and culture) appeals. But the money needed for even a semester seems to be too great, with you unable to summon the necessary amounts. Going abroad requires funds — and you just don’t have them.

Perhaps they aren’t needed, however. While the cost of traveling is irrefutably high, there are ways to counter it. Scholarships, financial aid and flat-mates can ensure a better (less expensive) time.

One: Scholarships. Should your grades be worthy of attention, universities will be willing to offer relief. Classes and dormitory costs can be covered, leaving you with fewer concerns.

Two: Financial Aid. Your average is not flawless; there are credits that sink your grades. But financial aid can still be made available to you. These are not scholarships but are instead loans — meant to be repaid later. They can provide the help you need to succeed.

Three: Flat-Mates. A campus life is too costly. The dorms would require dollars you don’t have. Finding individuals to share an apartment with, however, can ease the burden. Money can be shared, reducing the overall expenses and allowing you to enjoy the city.

Studying abroad is not a cheap affair. It demands funds you simply don’t have. But they can be found, with outside aid and careful planning.

Cost shouldn’t be a deterrent. It should instead be an ease.

Words surround you — little phrases, inelegant shrieks, the lazy drawl of vowels. You wince, trying to comprehend the meanings, trying to understand the intents; but they can’t be found within the static. There is too much noise, too much chaos. Language can’t be mastered. It can’t even be attempted. And you struggle to explain yourself, become weary of every dull-eyed stare. No one recognizes your pronunciations. No one can decipher your hand gestures and pantomimes. Translations are lost within a barrier of language; and you wonder what made you believe you could ever be prepared for this.

Studying abroad is a notion that tempts many. The idea of indulging in a new culture leaves most individuals wanting to board a plane before their scholarships have even been secured. And it’s assumed to be an easy process — a language was practiced, after all, in class. Books should offer the necessary context.

They don’t, however. And many students find themselves overwhelmed by vocal differences as soon as they arrive.

The true intention of studying abroad is to become immersed in culture. An education is earned through experience, not simple pages. But this can become a burden when individuals find that they can’t be understood by their teachers, peers or even shop vendors. All exchanges become strained. All words become clumsy. Expressing even simple commands is an unexpected challenge.

And this can cause sudden frustration, worry and stress. Without the ability to speak as natives do, students will find no pleasure in their travels. Their time will be devoted instead to seeking out translations (as well as questioning the logic of their choices). It’s vital then that all understand the potential for confusion. Without a grasp of grammar and syntax, studying abroad can become an annoyance — and one not easily solved.

All must recognize this complication and be aware that searching for a new culture may not be the convenience they believed it to be.

The future is meant to be conquered — this is not an easy thing, you know. It requires careful choices and far more careful planning. All decisions must be deliberate, with the intention to succeed. So you select only the best classes; and you devote yourself to learning. The desire is to fill a resume with all of the valiant efforts: exceptional grades and endless extracurricular activities. Employers will demand excellence, you believe. You must be able to offer it to them.

But there are certain elements that are missing from your credentials. You have no languages to offer, no experience to give. You’ve been defined by the borders of your home, have never seen any corners of the many countries. And that… is not acceptable. Because companies are expecting more from students. They wish them to have knowledge and the ability to apply it: the real world mastery must be gained. But you aren’t certain how to achieve that before the new semester begins.

The answer is surprisingly simple — choose to study abroad.

Students wishing to distinguish themselves from the masses (all of whom can offer undeniable skills and strengths) should consider accepting a position within an international university; even if only for a singular term. While this may seem to be a burden — causing a separation from family and friends, a strain of finances — it can instead be a relief. Employers delight in candidates who can offer experience. Those who have been immersed in different customs and languages can provide value to any team. They can offer an uncommon view and the ability to understand the many cultural distinctions.

And this is vital to modern businesses.

A resume won’t impress without the essential traveling. Individuals who wish to seek their ideal careers must recognize the importance of studying abroad. An education for the present can greatly influence the future — and it’s essential for those who are wanting to succeed.

The semester has been kind. All days spent within a foreign country — despite the many warnings, the familial concerns — have been successful. An education has been earned; classes have been conquered; and you are sad to leave the culture you have become so fond of. The chance to study abroad is one you could never regret. It is instead an experience like no other and you’re certain you will attempt it again. But you must first return home and declare your credits. They’ll be tucked within a computer, applied to your degree… or so you assume.

The truth, however, is far less appealing.

Transferring certain courses proves to be difficult. Some of the efforts you gave cannot be counted toward your diploma. They are instead deemed futile, offering no aid to a major. You’ll be granted no recognition for them and you’re stunned.

You shouldn’t be.

A common complication with studying abroad is that certain credits may not be valid upon returning home. Students can find massive portions of their semesters gone, unable to verified. Endless hours of theorizing and examining facts can be reduced to a quick refusal — the classes won’t be transfered.

It is imperative then that all individuals be aware of what they are studying and how it can later be applied. Research all courses, ensuring that they are able to be used to further an education. The intention is to graduate within four years. Should programs be denied, however, that can become impossible. Money, time and energy will be wasted. All must understand what their majors need and then choose classes that will be relevant.

Never assume that all courses are secured. They aren’t. It’s a complicated process to move credits from one university to another — especially when there is a separation of languages between them. Be certain you understand what is valid and what is instead useless. Choose only what will be transferred back to you.

There is a wisdom you’ve been offered — passed down from your parents, understood as vital. You are never to be in debt. The purpose of a life is to be without dependence, able to rely on your own skills (rather than accepting aid from others). All finance is to be mastered; all dollars are to be earned. You are never to demand funds from any source beyond your own bank account. And this is a philosophy you have adhered to, knowing it to be the only way to secure your credit scores and keep away from the dreaded interest.

But your desire to study abroad has branded the notion problematic. It is expensive to settle in another country, even if only for a semester. There are classes to consider and a dorm space to secure; there are traveling demands and endless other costs. You simply don’t have the ability to pay for what you want (and a scholarship is sadly beyond you).

You need help. You need financial aid.

Despite the belief that receiving assistance will force you into sudden folly, financial aid can be a great relief. Through it you can obtain the dollars you need to experience living abroad — without struggling to match these demands on your own. A university education can be achieved: with all room, board and book expenses countered. It merely requires a simple loan.

It must be explained that students will be required to repay all assistances after their schooling is done. This does not have the freedom of a scholarship and a plan will have to be formed. Most of these are reasonable, however, and will not send your credit spiraling toward bankruptcy. All payments should be easy to maintain.

And because of this it becomes vital for students to consider financial aid. It may be the only way to accomplish studying abroad — without depleting an entire bank account.

Receive help and earn an education.

It’s an easy excitement: a journey has finally ended; a country has been found. You’re soon to begin your education, seeking knowledge from the unfamiliar corridors, the classrooms echoing with a new language. It has always been a dream to study abroad and you’re thrilled to be experiencing it now. You’ll earn your degree by mastering another culture. There is no greater adventure, you believe.

There is also, however, no greater complication — because you didn’t understand the differences of economy, the weakness of the dollar. Many items demand high payments and you aren’t certain whether you can afford them all.

The most unfortunate truth students can discover while traveling abroad is that there’s far more to purchase than books. College is not a singular expense. It’s instead buoyed by countless others — all of which can wreak havoc on bank accounts.

Individuals must therefore recognize what their money will be divided amongst, and find ways to lessen the strain. The most common expenses are:

One: Food. It’s tempting to devote each day to exploring the many tastes and textures of local cuisine. It’s less tempting, however, to deplete your dollars with restaurants and street stalls. Choose to buy groceries instead, cooking your own meals and saving.

Two: Phone. The need to converse with your family is paramount; but those conversations can quickly form impossibly high bills. Long distance charges can be problematic. Choose online options (like web chats or email) instead to reduce the worry.

Three: Utilities. You’ve forever been reliant on your parents, expecting them to pay for heat and electricity. While living abroad, however, such items will become your responsibility should you not live on campus. Try bartering a lowered rent rate to receive an excess of funds.

Studying in another country is a desire that can’t be denied, but its costs can devastate those who are unprepared for them. Be aware of your weekly expenses and find ways to combat them.

All lessons are to be offered within classroom corners, the gabled roofs of universities — this is a truth you used to accept, understood to be practical. Education is meant to be defined to the borders of a campus. You’re to learn through the aid of blackboards and professors. This is the logical order of things, and you once believed it completely.

But there are forms of an education that can’t be earned through books. History becomes stale when presented in ink; philosophy loses power when confined to pages. Classes are essential — but they’re not the only way to gain knowledge. And you are beginning to question the necessity of moving from high school to college so quickly.

For many American students universities are an expectation. There is to be no hesitation; these destination are to simply be sought. But they cannot always provide the craved facts, the necessary experiences. They trap knowledge within highly organized and highly tedious formats. Those wishing to discover more than books will be disappointed — especially when they’re forced to attend classes as soon as their high school graduation is done.

And this is why a gap year is so vital: by traveling the world students can absorb information that could never be contained within academia. The customs and religions, languages and routines of foreign lands can be observed — and mimicked. Individuals can earn an education of cultures; which will enable them to better themselves and their futures.

Traveling is not — despite what so many may assume — an excuse to deny colleges. This is not a refusal of formal learning. It’s instead the belief that students must become aware of the world before they can master it; and all who indulge in a gap year will be rewarded with far more than mere degrees. They will instead have the ability to understand the differing cities, cultures and strangers. It’s a benefit that can’t be denied.

It’s to be an exploration of the world, a discovery of unfamiliar shores: you’re seeking to travel across the miles, wanting to find your sense of wonder (and sanity). High school is over; college has yet to begin; and the year belongs to you. You intend therefore to shape it to the grand experiences. You want to indulge in the many adventures. This interlude is one you have been planning for months — and you can barely contain your enthusiasm for it.

That enthusiasm dims considerably, however, when you suddenly become ill before your trip and it’s revealed that you are no longer offered protection under your parents’ insurance.

This is an unexpected event — you have always been shielded from the man y worries. But the plan no longer supports your age, can’t favor you if you’re not a student; and you wonder how you are meant to survive your journey without aid.

The desire to indulge in a gap year is one many American students have. They wish to ignore the traditional path of seeking college as soon as their secondary schooling is done. They want instead to travel, to volunteer their services to the world. They want… freedom.

Such freedom comes with an unfortunate cost, however. The insurance policies that protect all college-goers are suddenly voided. Individuals who do not remain full time students cannot earn coverage without paying for it themselves (a feat that isn’t easy for young adults). If they choose to follow the gap plan, they will be without the proper care — and this could be problematic while traveling. It is all too simple to suffer from sickness while in a foreign land.

Individuals must therefore be aware of the potential loss, and understand if they can afford it. Taking an entire year to explore countries could ultimately be too expensive (if any complications should occur). Without insurance traveling may need instead to be postponed or simply shortened.

It is the chance of a lifetime. This is no common statement, offered after some tedious revelation. This is instead a truth. You have the opportunity to study abroad, to seek an international education. Your classes could be centered among the historical cities, the distinguished monuments. You could experience cultures so different from your own (but just as vital). It is a dream able to become a reality, and you can think of no better way to spend the semester than in another land.

But there is a worry you haven’t considered — a possible threat. The world has not been tamed. There are certain individuals who would despise you from just a glance. There are countries that would offer dangerous political policies and a distinct lack of protection. You cannot simply go where you please, assuming that all villages will be safe. They won’t be; and this must be understood.

Studying abroad is an undeniable advantage. It offers all of the craved experiences, the unique knowledge. Individuals can gain new insights into cultures and customs, as well as develop their own egos (confidence is always gained when students are left to fend for themselves). But these advantages are not enough to counter the unfortunate truth that there are certain destinations that cannot — and must not — be sought.

All university bound individuals must recognize the current sways of politics and war (as well as religious concerns and gender discrimination). Not every country can — or should — be accessed. Decisions must instead be shaped by caution. Note where you intend to study and how steady its infrastructure is. Avoid areas that seem destined for social upheavals and be wary of cities that have suffered from poor relations with your home in the past.

Studying abroad may be your wish but safety must be your true concern. Never seek an international university without first understanding the potential problems and how they will effect you.

Traveling — you have decided — is your true purpose. Your life isn’t meant to be shaped by the traditional campuses, the tedious goals. You seek instead to study abroad, to spice your education with international flavors. History will become relevant when offered overseas; and you want to experience more than the expected days.

But those expectations must still guide your decisions. No college can simply be considered because of its location (the tempting coastlines and monuments). You must instead apply logic to your choices, defining dreams to wisdom. Every university must meet all of your criteria; and you must recognize what you need rather than merely what you want.

Understand:

One: Selection. Be certain any university you consider has the appropriate selection of courses. These should assist your major and must be able to be transfered correctly later. Be aware of what you wish your future to be, and allow credits to help you meet your goals.

Two: Aid. Look for colleges that provide financial assistance and scholarship programs. The expense of studying abroad can prove to be too high for many young adults. Seek all the help you can find to lessen the strain.

Three: Safety. Distant lands may tempt but they can also be dangerous. Never select any university that is located within a country you cannot trust. Being protected is the most vital concern. Understand all foreign policies and potential upheavals.

Four: Culture. The purpose of traveling is to seek out new customs. Be sure that a school is within an easy distance of landmarks, monuments and historic towns. Do not keep yourself tucked too far from the locals and their language.

Wishing to study abroad is a noble idea. It requires more than simple desire, however. You must instead understand what you need from a university and only consider those choices that provide it all. Your criteria must be followed. Don’t settle for weak potentials. Find only the best values.

It’s an assumption you made long ago, a decision shaped by your ego — international schools provide no value, you believe. They lack the sophistication, the necessary rewards. They are distinguished instead only by their surroundings (which you can admit offer entertainment but nothing more). You’re not interested in seeking historical cities if the lessons earned in classrooms are weak. Your future is to be a successful one; and your goals must be accomplished through hard work and constant effort. Such effort would be wasted by traveling abroad, however. No foreign universities can match the standards of your country. This is your singular certainty.

It is as untrue as it is limiting.

As of 2010 the most prestigious organization of the world is not found within the United States (though the majority of the top 10 are, this should be noted). It is instead the University of Cambridge, settled in the United Kingdom.

Founded in 1209, Cambridge is the second oldest college within England — as well as the seventh oldest of its kind within the world. Its reputation was earned immediately, with scholars from the prestigious Oxford University breaking away from their former home and crafting it (ensuring that all lessons would be ones of good intentions). It rose quickly among the European leagues, establishing itself as a premiere institution. And the years have proven this, with endless awards and accolades bestowed upon both it and its pupils.

And because of this Cambridge is now considered the most valued college of all — besting Harvard, Yale and countless others. Its courses are sought by thousands each year, offering the essential credits and classroom experiences. The education earned there is one that guarantees success and bright futures.

And this marks it worthy of all attentions — including yours.

Too often is it believed that international universities can provide no value. But Cambridge proves instead that there is much to discover and much more to learn.

An international education is an unobtainable dream: this is the assurance you’ve offered yourself each day, the sad reality you have been forced to bear. The notion of studying abroad appeals to you greatly; but you fear you could never indulge in the exploration. Because you speak no foreign languages and you have studied no unique customs. Your knowledge is settled firmly in the American sensibilities, the small town understandings. Seeking continents and strange miles is surely an impossible thing. You could never master dialects and philosophies. You would only offend entire cities.
So you deny yourself even the consideration of leaving. Traveling is simply not an option you can entertain.

But this is no longer true. There are international colleges for you to find; and these will not demand a sudden need for accents and complex pronunciations. They will instead offer relief — none more so than the University College London.

University College London (more affectionately named UCL) is one of the premiere institutions of the world. As of 2010 it ranks fourth among academic ratings — settled only behind Cambridge University, Harvard and Yale. Since its establishment in 1826 it has become one of England’s most revered colleges: providing education to all who wish to seek it, defying the once damning limitations of religion or gender (its acceptance of all creeds was revolutionary during its founding). UCL now stands as one of the most impressive organizations of its kind. And it is ideal for those searching for international beauty without the international language barriers.

Students who have not been able to master dialects are not to despair. They can enjoy an abroad program. The country they choose must simply reflect their own alphabet — and Americans will find much relief in England. UCL can provide a sterling education without demanding an impossible language.

It is a compromise that will please all and offer endless values. UCL is the advantage that must be taken.
